The Story of Lucía and Mélanie

15-09-2010 - The two little sisters Lucía and Mélanie (7 and 9 years old) were found in a one-room shed, full of cats and dogs. They were both undernourished and their hair was full of lice. It appeared that both parents had alcohol problems and therefore “did not have time” to take care of the little girls. This resulted in child neglect: failure by the parents to meet the children’s basic needs like food, safety and education. The young children had to take care of themselves which affected their health, development and safety.

Due to the extreme situation, the Children’s Judge decided to temporarily separate the girls from their parents. They were placed in the temporary custody program of our Child ‘N Family center. Of course, our team immediately started to work not only with the children, but also with the father and mother. The psychologist who was responsible for this case, focused mostly on the alcohol problem. Both parents started to attend AA meetings and after nine months the drinking problem was under control. Thanks to that and a long series of therapies, the situation stabilized.
The children finally returned home and the family reunification is working out quite well. The girls still visit the center twice a week to make their homework. Our therapist and social worker keep on visiting the family at home to check on the situation and give guidance if necessary.
