The Story of Priya

Illiterates - Priya is almost four and she loves school. She can repeat endlessly the vowels and consonants of the Nepalese alphabet. It is even more interesting when the teacher takes the book and shows the characters of the Devanagari script. After that, Priya enthusiastically copies the various letters in her notebook. The other kids get restless pretty soon and start to play. But Priya just continues to practice and doesn’t lose her concentration.

Priya’s parents belong to the huge group of illiterate people in Nepal: among adults almost 40% of men and 70% of women can not read nor write. In the small mountain villages where they lived, Priya’s parents never went to school but always worked in the fields. Priya is the eldest of their children and the first in the family to receive education. When she comes home from the Child ‘N Family center, she immediately starts her homework, assignments which take around 15 minutes. The social worker of the center asked the parents to join their daughter when she makes her exercises. And that is what they do: thanks to their little daughter they now also learn the very fist basics of the Nepalese alphabet. They are very grateful for the chances they get; not only for their child, but also for themselves.
