The Story of Bina

30-06-2010 - Bina is five and her parents are from the West. In this part of Nepal, the farmers have suffered long periods of draught already since a few years. That is a disaster, which caused one after the other harvest to fail. And when the draughts are interrupted by extreme severe rainfall, it causes erosion and even more problems for agriculture.
Also this year (2010), the monsoon is extremely disorganized. There are floods in the East, some rain in the Kathmandu valley, but still nothing in the West. Bina’s family cultivates rice and corn, but they are not self-sufficient anymore and structural hunger is increasing. That’s why her parents came to the city last year. They earn money working in the sand pit and send it back home to support their family. For themselves there is not much left, which convinced us to accept Bina in the Child ’N Family center.
End of June we celebrated “Asar Pandra” in the center, the rice festival. It is observed as an auspicious date for plantation rice and Nepalese farmers celebrate it by planting rice with much joy, playing with muddy water, singing and dancing. Bina is five and she loves dancing: hopefully her enthusiastic dancing in our center will help and rain will start falling soon in her village.
