The Story of Nikhil
Nikhil is an adorable four year old boy, always singing and dancing in nursery class and yelling out loud the sounds of the Nepalese alphabet. He belongs to a loving and caring family, although their background is quite complicated. His parents originally come from the Gorkha district, which was affected by the Maoist guerillas and was classified as “Sensitive Class B” district by the Nepalese Home Ministry. Nikhil’s parents had to leave their home and came to Kathmandu to find a more secure life. They now belong to the almost 70.000 internally displaced people who remain unable or unwilling to return home. More than three years after the government of Nepal and the Maoists ended their ten-year conflict, durable solutions to displacement are still not available.

Nikhil

Maoists have still not returned the confiscated house and land of Nikhil’s parents and it has appeared particularly hard to recover their belongings. That is why they still live in Kathmandu, under difficult circumstances. Nikhil’s father works long hours for little pay and his mother is still without a job; she wanted to stay home for her youngest son. Now that Nikhil is coming to the Child ‘N Family center from Sunday till Friday, she is also looking for work. Hopefully they will be able to save some money for legal assistance in order to get their property back and return to their own place. Thanks to the education he now gets in the center, Nikhil will then be prepared to enter primary school.
