The Story of Nischal

10-01-2011 - Nischal just turned four and his family originally comes from a remote area in the West of Nepal. It is one of the regions where good water supplies, sewerage and healthcare facilities are almost non-existent. For clean drinking water, they had to walk more than half an hour through the mountains; the toilet was a hole in the dirty ground; ambulant medical teams passed by only a few times a year; and they never received information about hygiene.
All this had a very sad outcome for Nischal’s family. Because of the polluted water, his elder brother got often heavy diarrhea, which caused malnutrition and dehydration, and finally he passed away. The parents of Nischal wanted to protect their other children and decided to move to the city. The water supplies are definitely better here, but still not optimal. They live in Jorpati and do their utmost best to find work and build up a healthy life.
Nischal is now attending the Child ’N Family center, where they take good care of him. The kitchen is hygienically clean and water is first boiled and then filtered twice. The child caretakers always check if Nischal washes his hands and if he eats and drinks enough. Up till now we can only conclude that he is healthy and growing fast! The social worker advices the parents about personal sanitation and general healthcare, which means that at home the children also live in a healthier environment.
