The Story of Prasuna

15-03-2011 - Prasuna is five years old and a calm, neat girl. She lives with her parents and baby sister in a rent room in Jorpati. The neighborhood has been expanded quite fast over the last few years, with big, high buildings. Often there are four rooms on one floor, which means there live four families. On average, around five people live in one space, where they also sleep and cook. On the hallway there is one bathroom for every four to eight families.
The expansion of the area brought along employment and both Prasuna’s mum and dad work in the construction industry. They have day jobs and receive low wage rates for hard labor work. They carry heavy loads of gravel, sand and stones, using baskets with a headband. They take Prasuna’s baby sister to work: this means the mother carries a baby on the front while carrying the construction materials on the back. But Prasuna herself was already too old and would only be a bother wondering around on the building site; so she was left home alone.
Now she comes to our Child ’N Family center, where she feels safe and quietly passes the day. Her parents try to work as many hours as possible, before they will be unable to continue because of headaches and back pain. Hopefully they will then find another branch to work in, to be able to pay the education of their daughters.
